TOUR OVERVIEW
Duration: 10 Days / 9 Nights
Destination: Tanzania — Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, Central & Northern Serengeti
Level: Mid-Luxury
Group Size: 2–8 travelers
Start / End: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha
Follow the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth on this extraordinary 10-day Tanzania safari that tracks the Great Migration from the ancient woodlands of Tarangire to the sweeping plains of the Serengeti. Over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle, move in an endless clockwise loop across Tanzania and Kenya — and this itinerary puts you right at the heart of the action.
Begin with the baobab-studded paradise of Tarangire, where elephant herds gather in the dry season around its life-giving river. Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater — the world's largest intact caldera and a natural fortress teeming with the Big Five — before ascending to the endless Serengeti, where the horizon seems to curve away under the weight of migrating herds. Comfortable mid-luxury camps deliver exceptional game viewing with the comfort and intimacy of a private retreat.
This Tanzania safari is crafted for travelers who understand that witnessing the Great Migration is a bucket-list moment that demands the right positioning, the right timing, and the right guide. Every element has been designed to maximize your chances of witnessing dramatic predator-prey encounters, river crossings, and the sheer spectacle of one million animals on the move.
TOUR HIGHLIGHTS
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your Arusha hotel, the classic gateway to Tanzania's northern circuit. Enjoy a welcome dinner and a detailed briefing with your guide covering the migration cycle, current wildlife movements, and what to expect at each destination.
Overnight: Arusha (boutique hotel)
Drive southwest from Arusha into the heartland of Tarangire National Park, where ancient baobab trees dot a landscape alive with year-round elephant herds. The Tarangire River acts as a magnet in the dry season, drawing every species in the ecosystem to its muddy banks. Afternoon game drive reveals elephants, lions, large buffalo herds, and an extraordinary diversity of birdlife including the endemic yellow-collared lovebird.
Travel time: approximately 2 hours. Overnight: Tarangire tented camp
A full day exploring Tarangire's varied habitats — from riverine forest to open savannah to seasonal swamps. Morning drives offer your best chances for lion sightings and large elephant aggregations; afternoon drives explore the park's lesser-visited southern sector where leopards lurk in the dense woodland. Your guide's intimate knowledge of individual animals and seasonal patterns elevates every moment.
Overnight: Tarangire tented camp
Depart Tarangire and drive through the agricultural foothills of the Rift Valley, past Maasai bomas and rolling highlands, to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Arrive at the crater rim as afternoon light floods the caldera 600 metres below — a view that consistently leaves seasoned travelers speechless. Settle into your rim-top lodge or tented camp for an early night ahead of tomorrow's crater descent.
Travel time: approximately 3–4 hours. Overnight: Ngorongoro rim lodge/camp
Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater at dawn, entering what many call the Eighth Wonder of the World. The 260 sq km caldera floor supports around 25,000 large mammals — including one of Africa's highest densities of black rhino — and offers arguably the finest Big Five game viewing on the continent. Search for lion prides, leopards draped in acacia trees, herds of buffalo, and the shy black rhino. Enjoy a bush picnic lunch beside a hippo pool before ascending the crater rim in the late afternoon.
Overnight: Ngorongoro rim lodge/camp
Enter the Serengeti National Park through the Naabi Hill Gate, where the plains stretch away to every horizon in one of Africa's most stirring vistas. Spot the resident kopje-dwelling lions as you drive north into the central Seronera region — one of the Serengeti's most productive wildlife corridors year-round. Afternoon game drive begins immediately on arrival, with lion, leopard, and cheetah all regularly spotted along Seronera River.
Travel time: approximately 3 hours. Overnight: Central Serengeti camp
An unrestricted full day in the Serengeti ecosystem — the star of every Tanzania safari. Follow your guide's intelligence on current lion prides, cheetah coalitions, and migration herds as they shift daily with the rains and the grass. Sundowners on a flat-topped kopje as the sky turns amber and violet bring a perfect end to a day that reminds you why the Serengeti is considered the greatest wildlife show on earth.
Overnight: Central Serengeti camp
Drive north through the Serengeti's Loliondo corridor into the Kogatende area, the most dramatic arena for Mara River crossings (July–September). Even outside the peak crossing window, the northern Serengeti offers exceptional year-round game viewing, with permanent leopard, elephant, and the densest concentration of predators in the ecosystem. Afternoon game drive upon arrival.
Travel time: approximately 3–4 hours. Overnight: Northern Serengeti camp
Position yourselves at prime Mara River crossing sites as your guide reads the herd movements and waits for the moment the wildebeest commit to the water. Crossings are unpredictable — herds can hesitate for hours before plunging in — but the anticipation is half the drama. Outside July–September, enjoy game drives along the Mara River corridor hunting big cats and hippo pods.
Overnight: Northern Serengeti camp
One final morning drive before transferring to the Kogatende airstrip for a scheduled bush flight back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro (flight included in package cost). Arrive in time for lunch and a final afternoon in Arusha for last-minute shopping at the Central Market or a visit to the Cultural Heritage Centre.
Depart Arusha with memories of one of the world's great wildlife journeys.
Tour activities will be arranged by out tour guides as per destination traveled.
