Duration: 5 Days / 4 Nights
Destination: Kenya — Nairobi National Park & Masai Mara
Level: Budget / Camping
Group Size: 4–12 travelers
Start / End: Nairobi
Africa's greatest wildlife experience does not have to cost a fortune. This 5-day budget camping safari delivers all the magic of the Masai Mara — lion prides, cheetah sprints, elephant families, and vast herds of wildebeest — without breaking the bank. Sleep under canvas in quality public campsites on the edge of the Mara ecosystem, eat freshly prepared camp food under the stars, and spend your days in an open-sided safari vehicle with an experienced guide who knows every termite mound and lugga in the reserve.
This camping Kenya safari is perfect for solo travelers, backpackers, and budget-conscious adventurers who want a genuine wildlife experience rather than a luxury lodge stay. You will share your campfire evenings with a small group of like-minded travelers from around the world — which, if you ask any alumni, is often the best part of the whole trip.
The Masai Mara Express is our most popular entry-level safari. It does not cut corners on what matters: game viewing hours, vehicle quality, guide experience, and food. What you leave behind is the king-sized bed and swimming pool — what you gain is the sound of lions roaring through your canvas tent walls at 3am, which is, quite honestly, priceless.
Meet your guide and fellow travelers at the Nairobi departure point at 7am. Drive directly to Nairobi National Park — the world's only national park inside a capital city — for a two-hour game drive with the Nairobi skyline as your backdrop. Lions, black rhino, and buffalo roam freely just a few kilometres from downtown. Drive onward to the Masai Mara, arriving in late afternoon for camp setup and your first Mara game drive.
Travel time Nairobi–Mara: approximately 5–6 hours.
Overnight: Masai Mara public campsite
Up before sunrise for the best of the Mara's predator activity. Full-day game drive covers the park's key circuits — the Talek and Sand Rivers, the open plains around Olare Orok, and the Mara Triangle. Your guide's radio network keeps you updated on the best sightings across the reserve. Picnic lunch in the bush. Return to camp for dinner around the fire and a sky full of stars.
Overnight: Masai Mara public campsite
Morning focus on the Mara River, where hippos wallow in territorial pods and crocodiles line the banks in prehistoric rows. During migration season (July–October), this is prime crossing territory; at any time of year the river produces outstanding wildlife photography. Afternoon game drive covers the open conservancy areas bordering the reserve for additional predator and cheetah sightings.
Overnight: Masai Mara public campsite
Another spectacular full day in the Mara with maximum flexibility to follow the best wildlife action. Your guide will seek out the reserve's resident leopard territories, elephant family groups moving between the Mara Triangle and Talek, and the vast wildebeest herds that blanket the plains in season. Sundowners at a scenic viewpoint bring an end to your final full day in the bush.
Overnight: Masai Mara public campsite
One last early-morning drive before breaking camp and driving back to Nairobi. Arrive in the early afternoon, with time for lunch at a local restaurant and a farewell with your travel companions before dispersing to hotels and onward destinations. Your guide drops you at your Nairobi hotel or the airport.
Travel time: approximately 5–6 hours.
Tour activities will be arranged by out tour guides as per destination traveled.
Best Time to Visit: July–October for Great Migration; January–March for green season and excellent game viewing
Fitness Level: Easy — game drives are seated; light walking in and around camp
Vehicle Type: Pop-top 4WD minibus or Land Cruiser (max 7 per vehicle); open-sided game vehicle in the Mara
Health / Visa Notes: Yellow fever certificate may be required. Malaria prophylaxis strongly recommended. Kenya e-visa required for most nationalities.
Starting Price: From USD 690 per person (budget camping, based on group of 8)
