Duration: 7 Days / 6 Nights
Destination: Rwanda — Volcanoes NP, Akagera NP, Lake Kivu
Level: Mid-Range
Group Size: 2–8 travelers
Start / End: Kigali International Airport
There are few wildlife encounters on earth as profoundly moving as sitting face-to-face with a mountain gorilla. In the mist-draped forests of Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, these gentle giants go about their ancient lives with a dignity and intelligence that touches every visitor to the core. This 7-day Rwanda gorilla trekking safari combines that transformative encounter with golden monkey tracking, classic Big Five game drives in Akagera, and a restorative day beside the azure waters of Lake Kivu.
Rwanda has emerged as one of Africa's most rewarding travel destinations — efficient, safe, strikingly beautiful, and committed to community-based conservation. Gorilla trekking permits directly fund protection of the remaining mountain gorilla population (fewer than 1,000 individuals survive in the wild), making this a journey with genuine conservation impact.
This mid-range Rwanda safari suits active travelers with a spirit of adventure. Treks can last anywhere from one to six hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved overnight — so comfortable walking shoes and a sense of patient wonder are your most important packing items. The reward is an hour of privileged observation you will speak about for the rest of your life.
Arrive at Kigali International Airport — consistently ranked among Africa's cleanest and most efficient airports — and transfer to your city hotel. Kigali's immaculate tree-lined streets and vibrant restaurant scene make it a worthy destination in its own right. Your guide meets you for a welcome briefing and dinner this evening.
Overnight: Kigali (mid-range hotel)
After an optional morning visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial (a profoundly important and ultimately hopeful experience), drive north through Rwanda's extraordinary terraced landscape. The Virunga volcanoes gradually emerge on the horizon — a chain of dramatic peaks cloaked in primeval forest and cloud. Arrive at your lodge near Musanze for orientation and a briefing on gorilla trekking protocols.
Travel time: approximately 2.5 hours.
Overnight: Volcanoes NP area lodge
Today is the day. Your gorilla trek begins with a morning briefing at the park HQ at 7am, where ranger guides assign each group of eight trekkers to a specific habituated gorilla family. The trek through bamboo and dense montane forest takes between 30 minutes and six hours depending on gorilla movements — porters are available for hire and are enthusiastically recommended. When you finally locate the family, your permitted one hour passes in a heartbeat — a silverback at rest, juveniles tumbling and wrestling, mothers nursing their young. There are no words.
Overnight: Volcanoes NP area lodge
This morning tracks the endemic golden monkey — a vividly coloured primate found only in the Virunga mountains and found by many visitors to be equally charming and far more active than the gorillas. Treks are generally shorter and the monkeys move quickly through the bamboo canopy for superb photography. After lunch, depart for the scenic two-hour drive to Lake Kivu, Rwanda's western jewel.
Travel time: approximately 2 hours.
Overnight: Lake Kivu (lakeside lodge)
A restorative day on the shores of Lake Kivu, one of Africa's Great Rift Valley lakes sitting at 1,460 metres altitude. Morning at leisure — swim, kayak, or simply sit and absorb the extraordinary highland scenery. Afternoon boat cruise among the lake's archipelago of wooded islands, with a sunset over the Congo visible on the western shore. Evening at your lakeside lodge.
Overnight: Lake Kivu (lakeside lodge)
Drive east across the full width of Rwanda to Akagera National Park, the country's restored savannah gem. Akagera's rewilding story is one of conservation's great triumphs — lions were reintroduced in 2015, black rhinos in 2017, and the park now supports the full Big Five. Afternoon game drive reveals elephant, hippo, buffalo, and with luck, the newly established lion prides and elusive rhinos.
Travel time: approximately 3 hours.
Overnight: Akagera park lodge
Begin with a morning boat safari on Lake Ihema, Akagera's largest lake, for extraordinary waterbird viewing, hippos at rest, and massive Nile crocodiles. A final land game drive before lunch, then drive back to Kigali for an afternoon arrival. Transfer to the airport for your international departure, or spend a final night in the city.
Travel time: approximately 2.5 hours.
Tour activities will be arranged by out tour guides as per destination traveled.
Best Time to Visit: June–September and December–February for drier trekking conditions; gorillas can be tracked year-round
Fitness Level: Moderate to challenging — gorilla treks involve uphill hiking in dense forest for 1–6 hours; good walking fitness required
Vehicle Type: Private 4WD vehicle with experienced driver-guide
Health / Visa Notes: Yellow fever vaccination required. Malaria prophylaxis recommended (low risk in Kigali, higher in Akagera). Rwanda visa on arrival or e-visa.
